Every year, Google’s I/O developer conference is a sneak peek into the future of Android, and 2025 is no different. With Android powering over 3 billion active devices globally, it’s more than just an operating system; it’s how many of us connect, work, travel, and express ourselves.
From Nairobi to Lagos, and Cape Town to Cairo, Android’s latest updates promise a more personal, intelligent, and secure experience—tailored to the needs of everyday users across Africa. Here’s what’s coming and why it matters:
1. Phones and Watches That Match Your Personality
Android 16 and Wear OS 6 are turning your device into a canvas for self-expression. Thanks to Material 3 Expressive, you’ll be able to customize everything—from your phone’s colour palette to where your flashlight sits in the Quick Settings.
On smartwatches, the new design wraps beautifully around circular screens and colours the system to match your chosen watch face. Whether you’re in Nairobi’s creative circles or Johannesburg’s business scene, these updates let your devices truly reflect you.
Availability: Later this year on Pixel, then expanding to other devices.
2. Gemini Turns Your Car into a Smart Assistant
Whether you drive a car with Android Auto or one with Google built-in, Gemini is stepping in as your AI co-pilot. No more fiddling with commands—just speak naturally. Ask Gemini to find nyama choma spots along your route, translate your messages to a friend in French, or even help plan for your next meeting while stuck in traffic on Thika Road.
On long drives, it’ll summarise news or books, help locate your kid’s soccer field from an old email, and even suggest a charging station near a park.
Availability: Android Auto in the coming months. Built-in Gemini later this year (starting with Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5, and Honda Passport).
3. Smart Across All Your Screens—Watch, TV, and Even XR Glasses
Gemini is expanding beyond phones. On your Wear OS watch, it can remind you to grab your gym padlock while baking or fetch details from an email. On Google TV, Gemini will help recommend family-friendly shows or learning content for kids.
The most exciting part? Gemini will power future Android XR smart glasses, starting with Samsung. Imagine planning your Zanzibar trip or learning how to pitch a tent—all in immersive detail.
Availability: Wear OS and TV updates roll out in coming months. XR headsets coming later in the year.
4. Find Hub: Never Lose Your Bag, Keys—or Peace of Mind
Losing stuff is frustrating. Enter Find Hub, a redesigned “Find My Device” that can track more things—bags, headphones, or even loved ones (with permission). It works with tags from brands like July, Mokobara, Pixbee, and uses ultra-wideband (UWB) tech for precision tracking.
Even without mobile coverage, satellite connectivity (coming later this year) helps you stay connected—perfect for off-grid road trips or safaris. Airlines like British Airways and Singapore Airlines will also help track your luggage soon.
Availability: New tracking tags launch later this month. Satellite and airline features roll out in phases into early next year.
5. Smarter Messaging, for Everyone
If you’ve ever sent grainy photos via SMS, it’s time to upgrade. RCS (Rich Communication Services) is now widely available via Google Messages and supports better media sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, and seamless group chats.
Whether you’re planning an event in Accra or sharing lecture notes in Kampala, RCS ensures messages look good and arrive reliably.
Availability: Global rollout through Google Messages.
6. Fighting Malicious Apps with AI-Powered Security
Malicious apps in shady corners of the internet are a problem—but Android is stepping up. Google Play Protect now uses live threat detection to spot apps that try to disguise themselves or hide their icons. It checks every app—no matter where you download it—using on-device AI to flag risky behaviour before you install it.
This makes Android safer by default, especially in markets like Kenya and Nigeria where alternative app stores are popular.
Availability: Live threat detection coming to Pixel 6+ and select devices. Play Protect malware detection updates are already live.
7. Better Theft Protection: Even If Your Phone Is Stolen
Phone theft is a real issue in many African cities. Android’s new security features help you stay one step ahead. Factory Reset Protection is being strengthened so thieves can’t easily wipe your device. The new Remote Lock adds a security question before any changes can be made.
Also, in Android 16, One-Time Passwords (OTPs) will be hidden on your lock screen in high-risk situations—like when you’re not on Wi-Fi or haven’t unlocked your phone recently. This blocks a common scam where thieves snatch OTPs to access banking apps.
Availability: These protections are coming with Android 16 later this year.
