Posta Kenya Hikes Mpost Prices from Ksh 400 to up to Ksh 9,450 for Corporates

In a move that can be termed ‘ridiculous’, Posta Kenya is planning to raise annual Mpost rates by up to 2,000%.

The corporation published a notice on X (Twitter) indicating that the new rates have been in effect since 5th July 2024. The corporation has taken down the X post as of writing this.

From the notice shared, corporate customers will now be required to pay Ksh 9,450 per year while individual customers will be paying Ksh 2,000 every year.

Mpost has confirmed these price changes saying, “Dear all our valued client, our pricing structure has transitioned from ksh 400 to ksh 2050 (2,000 + 50 ecitizen fee). We understand that changes like this can sometimes catch you off guard, but we want to assure you that this adjustment comes with no compromise in the quality of service you’ve come to expect from us.”

There is no clear explanation for these price changes and this might now work well for the service.

MPost was designed to expand users of formal mail services by lowering costs, with ordinary post office boxes costing thousands of shillings per annum, with customers able to pay for one or several years. The service is targeting the younger generation who may not be interested in owning a physical post office box, and the main reason PCK went into a partnership with Taz Technologies was to help rev up revenues for the State agency that has taken a hit from the effects of Internet-based mailing and the entry of private couriers.

Mpost last raised its rates in March 2023 from Ksh 300 to 400 per year. This price hike was reasonable but the latest one if a bit too much. Paying ksh 2,050 when you are used to paying Ksh 400 is not something many people will accept.
