In a significant development for Kenya’s evolving data protection landscape, Digital Jewels, a prominent global technology firm, has announced its entry into the local market. This move comes as Kenya attracts foreign technology companies, highlighting the country’s growing importance in the field of data protection.

During the official announcement, Ms. Adedoyin Odunfa, the Founder and CEO of Digital Jewels, emphasized the opportunity to establish partnerships with like-minded organizations in Kenya. She expressed the company’s commitment to advancing the African narrative on data protection and information security, following its successful presence in 15 other countries.

Ms. Odunfa highlighted the importance of implementing best practice standards in data protection, such as ISO 27701, to enhance the security of data held within Kenyan institutions. While there is currently no specific deadline for registration with the Data Protection Commission, she stressed the need to keep pace with other East African countries like Rwanda, which have achieved high rates of compliance.

Digital Jewels’ entry into Kenya marks a pivotal moment in the journey of organizations striving to comply with national, regional, and global data protection laws. These regulations prioritize the control of data flows, which is essential for facilitating international trade, particularly since Kenya has ratified the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

To strengthen its presence in Kenya, Digital Jewels has formed a strategic partnership with Serianu, a leading cybersecurity and data protection consultancy firm. Together, they aim to provide comprehensive solutions by combining their respective expertise and offerings.

William Makatiani, CEO of Serianu, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, “We expect Serianu’s collaboration with Digital Jewels to deliver a robust approach to data protection, including governance frameworks, processes, and technology.” Makatiani emphasized that data protection has become a critical concern for organizations as they increasingly incorporate technology into their operations. He acknowledged the progress made in raising awareness about data protection in Kenya and highlighted the importance of implementing appropriate technology, policies, and processes.

Immaculate Kassait, the Data Commissioner, echoed these sentiments and affirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting and enhancing self-regulation. The Commission plans to introduce an accreditation program for third-party organizations involved in auditing and enforcing compliance with the Data Act. Kassait emphasized that self-regulation is a fundamental aspect of fostering compliance with data protection, beginning with institutional governance.

To facilitate this process, the office of the Data Protection Commissioner has developed sector-specific guidelines, including those for fintech and healthcare. These guidelines will soon undergo a public participation process to ensure broad stakeholder input.

The entry of Digital Jewels into Kenya’s data protection market signifies the increasing importance of safeguarding data and complying with regulations in an era of global trade and technological advancements. The partnership with Serianu aims to provide organizations in Kenya with the necessary tools and expertise to navigate the evolving landscape of data protection effectively.
