The Nokia G20 is one of the new smartphones from HMD Global to launch in Kenya. The phone is currently available in stores from Ksh 16,000. This is affordable but not cheap and at this price the phone is competing with some good devices from Xiaomi, Infinix and Tecno.

With the Nokia G20, HMD is promising two main things, a long-lasting battery and guaranteed software and security updates. Is this good enough to recommend the phone? That is something I will have to find out and share in the full review in the next couple of weeks.

Before we get to the unboxing, let us look at the key specifications of the Nokia G20.

    • Display: 6.5-inch; 720 x 1600 pixels
    • Chipset: MediaTek Helio G35
    • RAM: 4GB RAM
    • Storage: 64GB
    • Rear cameras: 48MP + 5MP + 2MP + 2MP
    • Front camera: 8MP
    • Battery: 5,050mAh

    What’s in The Box?

Here is what you should expect to find in the box when you buy the Nokia G20.

    • The Nokia G20
    • A Pair of Earphones
    • USB Cable
    • Wall Adapter for charging
    • Silicone Case

    Nokia G20 First Impressions

Taking out the Nokia G20 from the box, you will be impressed with the build quality as has been the case with most other Nokia smartphones. The back has a nice texture and feels good to hold. It is made of plastic and is not slippery neither does it attract fingerprints.

    Nokia G20 cameras

At the back is a circular camera module that houses the four cameras made up of a 48MP main sensor, 5MP and two 2MP sensors. The power button and volume buttons are on the right of the phone with the dedicated Google Assistant button on the left. The fingerprint button is embedded on the power button. The headphone jack is at the top with the USB C port and speaker grille at the bottom

For the display, the Nokia G20 comes with a 6.5 inch one with 720p resolution. This display is ok but at a day and age when we see high refresh rates and resolution on devices within this price, I feel like HMD did not do justice to the G20. It should have at least had a 1080p display.

    Nokia G20 display

Powering the Nokia G20 is the MediaTek Helio G35 processor that has been paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. This is not enough in my opinion and the phone feels slower compared to some of the devices it is supposed to compete with. As is the case with other Nokia smartphones, the G20 runs on stock Android with no bloatware like some of the phones it competes with. If this impresses you, the phone is worth looking at.

The phone is guaranteed to get at least two major OS updates and three years of monthly security updates. With that said, the phone should get Android 12 and 13 when they are available. The review unit I have is already running the September security update.

    Nokia G20 bottom

The camera module at the back as I have mentioned above is made up of a 48MP main sensor, 5MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP portrait lens. You can record 1080p videos at 30 fps.

The 5,050 mAh battery is what makes the Nokia G20 stand out. This battery should last for up to 2 or 3 days. The one disappointment I have with this battery is that it does not support fast charging so some patience is needed to charge this huge battery.

    Nokia G20 build

I will be using this phone over the next week and share my full review then.
