Netflix “Shuffle Play” Feature Launching this Year

Netflix has lots of movies, and TV Shows that it can often get confusing to settle down on one title. The streaming platform has been spotted testing a shuffle play feature last year, which, when clicked, automatically selects and plays a title it sees fit. Selection entirely depends on your viewing history.

In its latest financial report, the company states that it will officially add the feature in the first half of this year. In other words, before the end of June.

Shuffle Play will save Netflix subscribers most of the time they spend browsing for interesting titles to watch. Nielsen’s 2019 Total Audience Report showed that an average user spends 7 minutes choosing what to watch due to the vast number of choices.

And according to Greg Peters, the COO and chief product officer at Netflix, people come to the platform not knowing what to watch.

“It’s really working for us where our members can basically indicate to us that they just want to skip browsing entirely, click one button, and we’ll pick a title for them just to instantly play,” Peters said in an interview.

Shuffle Play has reportedly worked well for users in such situations. Netflix hasn’t settled for a specific name for the Shuffle Play feature yet, but one thing is certain for now – it won’t be ‘I’m feeling lucky” the name of Google’s search feature that shows you the top web search results. Peters says it will be “something better.”

Netflix recently announced its Q4 results where it added a total of 8.5 million paid net subscribers and crossed the 200 million mark for the first time. The streaming platform closed 2020 with a total of 203.6 million paying subscribers globally.
