Apple has today unveiled a new set of over-ear wireless headphones called AirPods Max, which will be an alternative to the in-ear AirPods. AirPods Max is the first over-ear headphones from Apple under its Airpods brand. The company has been long-rumoured to launch a new set of high-end headphones.

Airpods Max includes a custom acoustic design, H1 chips and software, all put together to deliver hi-fi (high-fidelity) Adaptive EQ, Active Noise Cancellation, and spatial audio.

“With AirPods Max, we are bringing that magical AirPods experience to a stunning over-ear design with high-fidelity audio,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

The headband is designed with a breathable knit mesh canopy that is aimed at reducing on-head pressure. Its stainless steel headband frame is flexible and can be adjusted to fit a variety of head shapes and sizes.

The ear cups, home to 40-mm drivers, have a substantial cushion that distributes pressure while wearing and is also handy in providing an immersive listening experience. You can adjust volume, play or pause audio, skip tracks, answer or end phone calls, and activate Siri without taking your phone out.

Airpods Max also supports Automatic switching between different Apple devices, and audio sharing between two devices, say iPhone and iPad.

Apple promises up to 20 hours of battery life with both Active Noise Cancellation, and spatial audio enabled.

The price? Airpods Max starts at $549, around Ksh 61,000, but you know the drill – local suppliers must always add a premium on top ‘cause it Apple.

The over-ear headphones come wrapped up in a so-called slim Smart Case which helps preserve battery charge when not in use, according to the company.
