Qualcomm, the US-based silicon company, yesterday unveiled a new mid-range processor with 5G support under its core. This time Qualcomm wants to bring 5G to the masses for real as this will be its first Snapdragon 6-series chip with support for the next-gen wireless technology, 5G.

Currently the company has only equipped its high end snapdragon 8-series and upper mid-range Snapdragon 7-series with 5G modems. But with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690, 5G is now coming to the lower midrange market.

It’s packs an Octa-core CPU with two large cores and six small cores with a maximum clock speed of 2.0GHz.

The setup itself takes performance a notch higher from the preceding Snapdragon 775 processor with CPU performance up by 20%. For the GPU, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 uses Adreno 619L GPU which according to the company should deliver a whopping 60% improvement. The processor is crafted using Samsung’s 8nm LPP process.

The Snapdragon 690 can accommodate up to 8GB RAM and will deliver some new features we haven’t seen in the Qualcomm lower-midrange segment yet.

These include 4K HDR video shoots, 5G support(only sub-6GHz), FHD+ displays with up to 120Hz refresh rates, and remarkable on-device AI thanks to the 5th gen Qualcomm AI Engine and the Hexagon Tensor Accelerator.
