HTC Unveils its First 5G-Powered Phone

HTC phones have had a good hiatus period, which is no surprise as the company’s smartphone division has been ailing. Marking its return, HTC launched two new smartphones dubbed HTC U20 5G and HTC Desire 20 Pro. The two succeed 2019’s U19e and Desire 19+.

The HTC U20 5G sits at the top with 5G support and runs on Qualcomm’s upper mid-range Snapdragon 765G processor paired with 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage expandable via microSD card.

Design-wise there’s nothing new. Performance-wise, despite the good hiatus period, the company hasn’t managed to bring any groundbreaking features.

You’re getting a 6.8-inch Full HD notched LCD display, a quad-camera array on the back which sits alongside a fingerprint sensor. The camera array consists of a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide, and 2MP depth and macro cameras.

The phone is powered by a 5,000mAh battery. The HTC U20 5G will be retailing at around NT$18,990 (around $640) in the Taiwan market.

On the other hand, the HTC Desire 20 Pro is a lower-midrange phone. The HTC Desire 20 Pro features a 6.5-inch display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 665 processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a massive 5,000mAh battery. This will be retailing at NT$8,990 (around $300) and will first hit the Taiwan market.

HTC has plans to launch the duo in “other markets” as well but didn’t specify when. The Taiwanese smartphone maker has struggled to keep up with the market after selling some of its design expertise to Google in 2018 for $1.1 billion.
