Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has released a new smartphone in its home market China with an inbuilt infrared temperature sensor. The phone can be able to read your body temperature by being held in front of your face or wrist in a snap – just like the normal body temperature sensors.

Odd as it sounds, a temperature sensor is not a common smartphone feature. But, damn, we are in the middle of a pandemic, and this proves as a handy tool for the current situation. The phone, according to Honor, can read temperatures between -20 degrees Celsius and 100 degrees Celsius – basically covers all the human body temperatures plus a whole lot more.

Honor Play 4 Pro is the name of the phone and is just another mid-range device. It comes in two models – Honor Play 4 and Honor Play 4 Pro. The base model is equipped with MediaTek’s Dimensity 800 processor and a minimum of 6GB RAM. The Pro version goes with Huawei’s in-house Kirin 990 processor, and 8GB of RAM.  It’s absurd that the Pro version has two camera lenses while the standard Honor Play 4 has four, including a primary, wide-angle, depth sensing, and macro camera.

The Honor Play 4 Pro is the one with an inbuilt temperature sensor and sells in China for CNY 2999 (around $421). If a temperature sensor scares you, then Honor has another Play 4 Pro variant lacking the feature and costs about $14 less. Otherwise, the base Honor Play 4 will start at CNY 1799 ($253). Despite the price both phones support 5G.

The new smartphone is currently available in the Chinese market and there’s no word on a global launch.
