Shelter-in-place orders are evidently boosting social media use, and one of the winners of this surge is TikTok. SensorTower now reports that the app has finally hit the 2 billion mark in terms of downloads across Google Play and the App Store, just five months after generating 1.5 billion lifetime installs.

In the January to March quarter, TikTok was downloaded more than 315 million times across these two app stores.

This made the platform break the records and currently holds the title as the app with the highest number of downloads in a quarter.

Prior to this period, TikTok’s best quarter was Q4 2018, when it amassed 205.7 million installs. In March this year, the research firm also reported that TikTok was downloaded nearly 113 million times in February, thus crowned as the number one non-game app with the highest number of downloads. As it also turned out at the time, the company also made its highest revenue in a single month.

TikTok’s most significant fan base is in India – similar to Facebook’s instant messenger chat app, WhatsApp. China is ranked as number two but leads in terms of user spending inside the app.

“The continuous rise of TikTok gives it an ever-bigger foundation to not only enjoy success for the short-term, but build for the long-term to keep competitors—both existing and emerging—at bay,” said SensorTower in a statement.
