The latest smartphone brand to make its way to Kenya is Lava. Lava is an Indian smartphone manufacturer that officially launched its devices in the country a couple of week ago. Its devices are available online through Jumia and you can get them through offline stores too.

I have the Lava Z81 and thought I should unbox it for you guys just to show you what to expect if you are planning to buy this phone. This phone is available in two variants, a 2GB and a 3GB models. The 2GB variant is available for Ksh 12,000 while the 3GB version is available for Ksh 14,000. At this price range, the Lava Z81 is really appealing for those looking for a reliable phone that is still affordable.

    Watch the unboxing video below.

    First Impressions

I have never used any smartphone from Lava and have never had any deep interest in the brand until they launched in Kenya a couple of weeks back. With that said, I was not sure what to expect to honest and at this point, I was ready for anything.

Taking out the phone out of the box, I was impressed. The phone feels really good and promising, it is actually better than I expected. The phone is light and has curved edges that make it comfortable to hold and carry around. It has a 5.7-inch display but does not feel huge or out of place thanks to its 18:9 aspect ratio. You will have no problems using this phone with one hand.

The build quality of the phone also feels solid. It does not feel cheap in any way and is actually a phone I would not mind using for an extended period. The back is made of plastic and is not removable. Also on the back is where you have the fingerprint sensor that is quite fast, the 13MP camera with LED flash and the speaker grille.

At the front we have the 5.7-inch display as I have mentioned above. This display has a resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. Above the display is the 13MP selfie camera that takes really good photos and can record Full HD videos. I was actually not expecting this front facing camera to be as good as it was.

Powering thee Lava Z81 is the 2GHz MediaTek Helio A22 processor that is paired with 2 or 3GB of RAM and 16/32GB of internal storage space. It comes with Android 8.1 Oreo with Star OS 5.1 custom UI. My experience with it has been good so far and this is one phone that offers good value for money for Ksh 12,000.
