Microsoft Has Confirmed That Some 2-IN-1 Laptops Will Not Get Any Windows 10 Updates Going Forward

Yesterday, we told you that some people who are using 2-in-1 laptops say they are having difficulties installing the latest Windows 10 Creators Update. This is happening even though they successfully installed the Anniversary Update that Microsoft released last year.

Microsoft is finally addressing this issue admitting that there won’t be any fix and all it will do is extend security patches to make sure the devices remain protected. In case you are unaware, the devices that will not be getting this latest update are mostly hybrid laptops that were released back in 2013 or 2014 and run on the Intel Atom Clover Trail CPUs.

Even though these devices got the Anniversary update, when users try to install the Creators Update, they get an error message that informs them that Windows 10 is no longer supported on their machines. This is the error Microsoft says is unsolvable in a statement seen by ZDNet. The statement says that these devices “require additional hardware support to provide the best possible experience when updating to the latest Windows 10 feature update”.

Microsoft explained, “However, these systems are no longer supported by Intel, and without the necessary driver support, they may be incapable of moving to the Windows 10 Creators Update without a potential performance impact.” If the company lets users of these devices install the update, the devices may end up being very slow or they may not work as expected.

As for security updates, the company has said that it will provide security updates to these units until 2023. This is fair enough for those who may be worried about the security of their devices.
