Are you one of the people who are still using devices running Android 2.1 or older? If you are, you should know that Google will be ending support for the Android Market on Android version 2.1 and older. The company will end support on June 30 bringing an end to the app store that we haven’t really heard much about recently.
Android 2.1 was released way back in 2010 but there are still people who are using it. Its market share is insignificant according to the latest Android distribution numbers that Google released at the beginning of the month. When this version of Android was released, smartphones were not as popular as they are right now. Back then the smartphones available on the market had low-resolution displays, few usable apps and low power.
Even though Android 2.1 has been around for ages, Google has still maintained the Android Market for the older phones. For those who may not be aware, this is the version of the app store that existed before the Google Play Store. It looks like Google has finally decided to end support for this store come June 30.
The company has said that there won’t be any notifications about the change sent to the devices themselves. The reason there won’t be any notification is because of ‘technical restrictions’ that exist on the Android Market app.
Those who have Android 2.2 or newer devices can use the Play Store going forward. Even though this is the case, Google has still said that it will continue supporting later versions of the Android Market for as long as feasible.
