Since people already spend time on social networks, it makes sense for these companies try and get companies on these platforms and hence make money through ads. Instagram is one such company and the social networking platform is currently testing a new product-tagging feature that will let companies advertise and sell their products through its platform.

Instagram is planning to introduce tags that will allow companies to tag their products inside images. This is exactly how you can tag a user right now on the social networking platform. When companies tag their products, users will be able to purchase the items directly from its platform. This means that users will not be forced to open any additional browsers to buy what you see on Instagram.

In a statement, Instagram said, “Most mobile shopping experiences today take people from the shop window right to check out—without giving consumers the opportunity to consider a product and get more information…Knowing that Instagrammers are open to discovery on the platform, and that people take time to better understand the products they’re interested in, this test gives our community valuable steps along their shopping journey before they make a purchase.”

Instagram plans to hide the product tags by default and users will have to reveal them by choice. This is to ensure the product placement is not so obvious and does not affect the user experience. The is already working with a number of ecommerce partners to test this product in the United States ahead of the holiday shopping season.
