The Tecno Phantom 6 Plus is the latest flagship smartphone from the company to be launched in Kenya. The phone was launched a few weeks ago together with the standard Phantom 6. Having had the Phantom 6 Plus I have decided to do this unboxing post just to show you what you get in the box when you buy this phone.

The Phantom 6 and 6 Plus take over from the Phantom 5, which I loved, that was launched back in 2015. I was really keen to see how Tecno was going to outperform the Phantom 5 with the Phantom 6/6 Plus.

    What is in the box?

You get some of the usual accessories in the box including the phone. Since this is a flagship device, Tecno has really tried with the packaging, all accessories are neatly arranged inside the big black box. Below are some of the main accessories you will find inside the box.

    The Phone (Phantom 6 Plus)

    Earphones

USB Type-C cable and Power adapter

    USB to USB C Adapter

    Screen Protector

    User Manual and Warranty Card

    SIM removal tool

    Flip Cover

As you can see from the accessories above, Tecno is bundling quite a number of items inside the box and that is why the huge box makes sense.

    First Impressions

When taking out the phone for the first time, the firts thing I noticed is how huge the phone really is. It has a 6-inch display that is a first for a flagship from Tecno, the standard Phantom 6 has a 5.5-inch display and you can get that if the big size is not something you fancy.

The big size aside, the Phantom 6 Plus looks really good, it has the Phantom logo at the front just below the display. This gives it a different look and leaves most people confused as to which brand phone it is. Most people tend to think it is a completely new brand until they see the ‘Tecno’ logo at the back.

At the back also sits the ‘Phantom 6 Plus’ branding which is at the bottom section. The 21MP camera that protrudes slightly sits at the top with the dual tone LED flash below it and the fingerprint sensor just after that. Am not a huge fan of the protruding cameras as they feel delicate and I am always worried that they might be damaged easily. The camera is not damaged just yet so that may just be me worrying about nothing, I will keep you updated on this in the final review that will be up soon.

The top of the Phantom 6 Plus has the headphone jack while the bottom has the Micro USB C port. There are also two speaker grilles but only one has the speaker, the other one is just for aesthetics. The SIM and MicroSD card tray is on the left side of the phone, this is a hybrid tray that means that you can only have one micro SIM and a MicroSD card or two SIM cards with no MicroSD card, you cannot have two SIM cards and a MicroSD card installed.

    Switching it On

When you switch it on, you are greeted with HiOS which is the company’s customized UI. It gives you the same Android experience you are used to which a few changes that you can get used to. If you don’t really like this, there are plenty of third party launchers that you can install from the Play store.

My first impressions with the Phantom 6 plus is that it feels premium, it is well designed and the attention to detail is clearly visible.

Point to note: The Tecno Phantom 6 Plus unit that I have is faulty. I have not been able to use it since it overheats and powers itself off even after using I for just 5 minutes. I have contacted Tecno about this (I contacted them about two weeks ago) but they are yet to provide a replacement unit so that is why I cannot give you the full experience of what it is all about at this point. I am not using the Phantom 6 Plus as my main phone at the moment because of this issue. I will try and get the replacement unit as soon as possible and include every nitty-gritty detail in my full review.

My colleague Saruni also did an unboxing of the standard Phantom 6 so you can check that out here.
