Apple as finally unveiled its latest smartphones, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. The standard iPhone 7 has a 4.7-inch display for those who are not fans of big screen smartphones. This is not impressive as we have seen this display with retina resolution but Apple says that it is 25% brighter and comes with a wider color gamut.

    What’s new?

The display aside, iPhone 7 stands out as being the first smartphone from the company to have IP67 certification meaning that it is water and dust resistant. It can survive a one-meter plunge in water for 30 minutes. This phone looks a lot like the iPhone 6 from the design angle with very few changes. Some of the things missing from this phone include the antenna bands that have been moved to the top and bottom edges. The headphone jack has also been axed and users will have to plug in their headphones through the lightening port.

Speaking of headphones, Apple has also introduced its new EarPod headphones that will be included in the retail box. The new EarPod headphones are your normal headphones and the company is including 3.5mm to Lightning port adapter to make it possible for users to connect the headphone to the lighting port.

As for performance, the iPhone 7 comes with the new A10 Fusion chip which is equipped with a quad-core CPU with two high-performance cores and two power-saving ones. The company says that this processor is 2 times faster than the A8 Chip and 40% faster than the A9 Chip.

Apple has also introduced a new Home Button with the iPhone 7. Unlike the previous button that was clickable, this new one is pressure sensitive using Haptic feedback which is the same as the MacBook Force Touch trackpad.

For the camera, the iPhone 7 has an updated 12MP camera that comes with f/1.8 six-element lens and optical image stabilization. According to Apple, the sensor used is 60% faster and 30% more efficient. The camera is supported by LED flash (four of them). The front facing camera is a 7MP one that can record 1080p videos.

Apple says that the battery of the iPhone 7 has been improved but did reveal much about it. The iPhone 7 will be available in select markets as from September 16 for $649 (approximately Ksh 66,000 before taxes) for the 32GB model.

The iPhone 7 Plus and the standard iPhone 7 share a lot of similarities with very few differences. The main difference has to do with the camera. The iPhone 7 Plus has a dual camera setup at the back which combines two sensors to work as 2x optical zoom. One of the sensors is a wide angle on while the other one is a ‘telephoto’ one.

Apple isn’t the first company to include a dual camera setup on its devices as we have been seeing this feature on other devices from LG to Huawei. The cameras are supported by quad LED flash to assist in low light environments. As with the standard iPhone 7, the Plus has a 7 MP front facing camera.

The iPhone 7 Plus has a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. Most of the other specs are exactly the same as those on the standard iPhone 7.

The iPhone 7 Plus will be available as from September 16 and will be retailing for $769 (approximately Ksh 78,000 before taxes).
