Videos have become very important for most social media sites for the last year or so. More and more users are sharing videos with their friends and this means that they will use sites that make it easier for them to do so. Facebook did not start as a video sharing site but for the last one year the company has changed things to make it easier for people to share videos with their friends. This is probably why you have been seeing many Facebook videos on your newsfeed recently and be sure that you will continue seeing them.

To make things even better for users, Facebook is working on a feature that will allow users to save videos for offline viewing. The company is working on this feature for its Android app and this will allow you to save video when you have a good internet connection and watch them when you have an unstable connection or no connection at all.

The videos will be save in the Facebook app under the saved section. This will be different from the current option that allows you to save videos but you need an active internet connection to watch them. The new feature will be similar to YouTube offline that allows you to download videos to your phone and watch them even when you have no internet connection. With YouTube offline, the videos are downloaded in segments in a format that only the app can recognize and we expect this to be the same for Facebook.

To save a video for online viewing, you will have to select the ‘Save video’ option from the drop down menu on the video when it is playing. You will be able to watch the saved video as many times as you like and then delete them when you are done. It is not clear if Facebook plans to include a feature that auto deletes saved videos after sometime the way YouTube does.

The save videos feature is currently available for Facebook for Android version 85 and 86 (beta) according to Android Police. The feature is still being tested so you will have to be patient if you do not have it on your app. I am running Facebook version 85 and I don’t have the feature just yet.

When rolling out this feature, Facebook will focus on developing nations such as Kenya where internet connections are not reliable. The company is yet to reveal when this feature will be available to all users, all we can do is wait and see. Keep it here as we will inform you when that happens.
