OnePlus is one of the fastest growing smartphone manufacturers that has taken the market by storm. The company is known for its affordable smartphones that come with high end specs you expect to find on premium devices. The latest device from the company is the OnePlus 3 which was launched two days ago and comes with 6GB of RAM and is retailing for $399 (approximately Ksh 40,000).

Besides the premium devices it has, OnePlus tried to make an affordable device last year that it called the OnePlus X. This was sort of an experiment for the company to see if it can provide even more affordable devices for those who do not have so much money to spend on its premium devices.

Going forward, OnePlus will not focus on this budget-friendly model to invest on its flagship devices only. The OnePlus X sold quite a good number of units but the company wants to focus on the premium devices that offer more value to its customers. According to its CEO Pete Lau, the decision to discontinue the OnePlus X lineup has nothing to do with the sales of the device, the company does not want to be distracted as it tries its luck with these affordable devices.

The company plans to put all its resources on its “true flagship” devices such as the OnePlus 3. This will give the company opportunity to make the best affordable smartphone with high end specs. With this shift in strategy, the company will merge its two operating system development teams. If you don’t know, the company has Oxygen OS which is available on all its devices available in international markets and Hydrogen OS which is available on its devices sold in China. It will be interesting to see how this plays out given that Oxygen OS is close to stock Android and Hydrogen OS is heavily skinned.

Asked whether the company has plans to make a smartwatch, its CEO says that it has discontinued those plans as it tries to focus on smartphones only.
