There is very little innovation in the smartphone market right now and the different devices released by the different manufacturers are almost the same. This means that those manufacturers who want to stand out from the rest have to do something that will attract attention. We saw this with Huawei with its latest smartphone, the P9, which features a dual camera setup at the back.
Now Samsung wants to do something crazy by introducing a smartphone with a foldable display. We have seen a uniquely curved display from LG with the G Flex but nothing like Samsung is working on.
A foldable display is really pushing the envelope am actually excited to see what it will be all about. We have heard about this foldable smartphone before and now the Bloomberg says that the company is looking at 2017 as the year to launch its first foldable smartphone. To be specific, Samsung may launch its first two foldable smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2017. This event will be taking place In February 2017 so we have about 8 months to see the devices.
According to the Bloomberg, one of the devices will be able to fold in “half like a cosmetic compact.” I wonder how this will happen but it will be interesting to see. The other devices will have an 8 inch display when unfolded which is the size of a tablet. When folded, the display size can be reduced to 5 inches.
If these smartphones ever see the light of day, it will be a game changer for Samsung. These smartphones will not replace the company’s flagship Galaxy S family as the company plans to use them as an experiment to show its prowess in the smartphone market. They will definitely put Samsung ahead of its rivals.
