    Images, Links and Usernames Will No Longer Be Included in Twitter’s 140 Character Limit

    If you have used Twitter, the you probably know that its 140-character limit can force you to shorten what you write and this may affect the message you want to pass along. This is especially so if you share photos or links, you are forced to look for ways to shorten what you write to ensure you are within the 140-character bracket. If you have been affected with this limit when sharing links or photos, you may be happy to know that Twitter is changing things to exclude them from the 140-character count.

    Last week we told you that Twitter had plans to exclude the links and photos from the count and it looks like the company is ready to implement the changes. The company said that users should expect changes within the next few months.

    In a statement, the company said, “These updates will be available over the coming months. Today, we’re notifying you and our developers, so that everything works as it should when we roll these changes out. The updates have a significant impact on Tweets, so we want to provide our developer partners with time to make any needed updates to the hundreds of thousands of products built using Twitter’s API.”

    The main changes that the company will be implementing in regards to the 140-character limit are four and the first one has to do with usernames. The company has said that usernames in replies will no longer be counted. With this, you will not have to worry about the limit even when you are replying to multiple people.

    The second change has to do with the media attachments and these are also not included in the character count anymore. This means that you are free to add photos, GIFs, videos, polls, or Quote Tweets without worrying about the 140-character limit.

    Thirdly, Twitter has announced that you will now be able to retweet yourself, if that is something you are interested in doing. This will be helpful if you tweet something and you feel like it didn’t reach enough people.

    Lastly, Twitter has announced that you will no longer be required to add a period (.) before the @ symbol if you want to tweet someone and you want all your followers to see it. the company says that you will be able to tweet someone starting with the @ symbol and have all your followers see it as long as it is not a reply.

    As mentioned, these updates will be rolling out in the next few months.
