Back in October this year, Microsoft announced the first three devices to come with Windows 10 Mobile. One of the three devices is the Lumia 550 which is the cheapest of them all and the one we will likely see in most developing markets such as Kenya. The other two are the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL.
All these devices hit retail stores globally as from late last month but we still haven’t seen them officially in Kenya or most other emerging markets. As we get close to 2016, we should expect to see these devices hit the headlines in most of these markets as they are likely to be launched anytime from today.
As for the Lumia 550, we are getting information that it will go on sale in India as from Wednesday this week. When most devices are launched in India, it usually takes two weeks to a month before we see them in Kenya. This means that the Lumia 550 will be available in Kenya sometime in January if not by the end of this year.
In India, the Lumia 550 will be retailing for approximately $140 (approximately Ksh 14,000). This price seems a bit high when compared to other entry level smartphones currently available in the country. I just hope that Microsoft tries as much as possible to have the price reduced slightly to make it competitive.
I will keep a close eye on this and inform you when the phone is officially launched in the country.
