Huawei was not an early bird in the Smartwatch sector as it launched its first Smartwatch early this month. This Smartwatch is powered by Android wear but it seems like Huawei is not entirely happy with the platform and thinks that Google should do more.

Huawei’s Vice President of Product Management Mr. Yang Yong was quoted saying, “We wish we had more freedom to customise the Android Wear platform.” He went further ahead to say that Huawei has conducted a research that shows that consumers want smartwatches with unique features.

I will agree with him on this as for there to be competition in the Smartwatch sector, we need different devices from different manufacturers offering different features. If all smartwatches running Android wear have the same features, why would someone buy one from a particular brand and not the other? This may boil down to the price which I don’t think will help the market grow because the big brands will be able to bring their prices down without any real innovation.

If you look closely at the Android wear smartwatches on the market, you will see that they are pretty much the same except for the outside appearances. This is probably what moved Samsung to launch smartwatches running on Tizen late last year. With this, they will be able to offer unique features that will probably help them with sales.

With that said, the ball is now in Google’s court. Android wear has the potential of being the best platform out there but all this depends on Google. Loosening restrictions will be a good start.
