M-Pesa has introduced a new Tap-to-Pay feature in Tanzania, allowing users to make contactless payments directly from their smartphones at Visa-enabled terminals worldwide.
The rollout was delivered in partnership with Paymentology, Vodacom Tanzania Plc, M-Pesa Africa and Visa. The feature is now available through the M-Pesa SuperApp on Android devices.
“At Paymentology, we believe innovations like Tap-to-Pay accelerate financial inclusion by making everyday transactions simpler and safer for everyone,” said Anna Porra, Chief Revenue Officer at Paymentology.
With the new functionality, users can pay by simply tapping their smartphones at contactless point-of-sale terminals. This eliminates the need for a physical card while extending M-Pesa’s utility beyond peer-to-peer and bill payments into everyday retail transactions.
“What began as a simple idea, giving M-Pesa customers the freedom to tap and pay anywhere using just their phones, is now a live reality,” said Epimack Mbeteni, M-Pesa Director at Vodacom Tanzania. “This launch reflects our shared commitment to making payments simpler, safer and more accessible for millions of people.”
The feature is built on Paymentology’s cloud-based issuing and processing infrastructure that enables tokenised transactions through the M-Pesa Visa Virtual Card. This effectively bridges mobile money with global card networks, allowing users to transact anywhere Visa is accepted, both locally and internationally.
“The advancement of mobile-money Tap-to-Pay is the result of effective collaboration within the payments ecosystem,” said Meagan Rabe, Vice President of Merchant Services, Acquiring and Fintech for Sub-Saharan Africa at Visa.
