TikTok has convened government officials, regulators, online safety organisations and industry leaders in Nairobi for the third annual Sub-Saharan Africa Safer Internet Summit.

The two-day summit was held under the theme “#SaferTogether: Innovation and Safety,” brought together policymakers, creators and technology stakeholders to discuss evolving online safety challenges across the region.

Speaking during the summit, Tokunbo Ibrahim, Head of Government Relations and Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa at TikTok, said the gathering aims to foster collaboration among stakeholders working to improve the digital ecosystem.

“Our mission is to share learnings, tackle common challenges, and collaboratively advance actionable solutions that protect citizens online,” Ibrahim said. “By bringing together policymakers, tech innovators and creators, we are working toward a more resilient digital landscape.”

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, officially opened the summit, noting the importance of partnerships between governments and technology companies in ensuring safer digital environments.

“As we embrace the opportunities of the digital era, we must protect our people by advancing digital innovation, responsible AI governance, and strong regional partnerships for a secure and thriving online ecosystem,” Kabogo said.

A major highlight of the summit was TikTok’s announcement of $200,000 in advertising credits to support organisations across Sub-Saharan Africa working on AI media literacy.

The funding builds on TikTok’s $2 million AI Literacy Fund launched in November 2025, which supports non-profit organisations globally that are working to improve public understanding of artificial intelligence.

Valiant Richey, TikTok’s Global Head of Partnerships, Elections & Market Integrity, said the company is focusing on working with trusted local organisations to improve public understanding of AI.

“With the rapid advancement of AI, we are committed to educating our community so they can engage responsibly with these technologies,” he said.

During the summit, TikTok also highlighted how artificial intelligence is used across the platform, from powering content recommendations to supporting moderation systems designed to identify and remove harmful content.
