Safaricom has today announced the return of Steve Chege to the company as Group Chief External Affairs Officer. In this role, he will support both Safaricom Kenya and Safaricom Ethiopia.
Chege will oversee several critical functions across the Safaricom Group, including Regulatory and External Affairs, Public Policy, Communication Strategy, Media Relations, Corporate Social Investments (CSI), ESG and Sustainability, as well as the integration of purpose across all operations.
The appointment marks Chege’s return to the Safaricom family after serving as Chief External Affairs Officer at Vodacom Group since 2021. During his time at Vodacom, he was responsible for supporting eight markets across Africa, including South Africa, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, Lesotho, Kenya, Ethiopia and Egypt.
At Vodacom, Chege led a high-performing external affairs function, steering major initiatives such as resolving operating licence renewals, tax matters, and spectrum acquisitions. He also played an important role in driving positive policy reforms in mobile money and telecom services while advancing the group’s ESG strategy and reporting.
Chege also oversaw the strategic reorganisation of the Vodacom Foundations. This helped align with the group’s purpose-led vision and strengthen Vodacom’s corporate citizenship impact across Africa.
Safaricom noted that Chege’s return comes at a pivotal time as the company continues to expand its regional footprint through Safaricom Ethiopia and deepen its impact in sustainability, innovation and digital inclusion across Africa.
