Mawingu has secured $20 million (Ksh 2.6 billion) in new funding from the Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Fund II (PRIF II).

Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday, Farouk Ramji, Mawingu’s Chief Executive Officer, said the capital will fast-track the company’s unique strategy of blending fibre, wireless, and renewable energy technologies to deliver affordable and reliable connectivity.

“This latest funding announcement marks a significant milestone for Mawingu, moving closer to our goal of positively impacting 1 million people in Africa by 2028,” said Ramji.

Mawingu’s growth model focuses on sustainability and innovation. Its base stations are powered by renewable energy, ensuring both cost efficiency and reduced environmental impact. By combining multiple connectivity technologies, the company is able to overcome the geographical and economic barriers that have long deterred infrastructure investment in remote regions.

PRIF II expressed confidence in Mawingu’s track record, saying, “Mawingu’s disciplined growth and innovation in underserved markets makes them an ideal partner for PRIF II,” said Ridwaan Tayob, who led the transaction. “This investment reflects our confidence in their ability to scale sustainably across Africa.”

In 2024, the company entered Tanzania through the acquisition of Habari. Mawingu currently serves over 26,000 homes and businesses across 31 Kenyan counties, operating more than 200 base stations.

This makes Mawingu the largest dedicated internet service provider for underserved markets in East Africa, a segment often overlooked by mainstream operators.
