Bolt Market has reported a 300% increase in orders since launching in Kenya in December 2024. In case you haven’t heard about it, Bolt Market is the grocery delivery arm of Bolt.
Customers are using the platform to order fresh produce, pantry essentials and household goods using the Bolt app. This service competes with Glovo and a few other lesser-known grocery delivery services.
Some of the factors that have led to Bolt Market’s rapid adoption in Kenya include the growing preference for doorstep delivery. This became popular during the pandemic and has continued since then. Bolt also offers over 3,500 items sourced from both large retail partners and local merchants. This approach offers users access both mainstream brands and locally produced goods on the same platform.
Bolt has also used its existing courier fleet to support the grocery deliveries. The company has experience in mobility and food delivery, and this has translated into efficient logistics. This ensures that grocery deliveries can be completed in under 20 minutes.
“The reception of Bolt Market has exceeded our expectations,” said Edgar Kitur, General Manager of Bolt Food in Kenya. “Kenyans want affordability without sacrificing convenience, and Bolt Market delivers exactly that. The rapid growth since launch confirms we are solving a real need.”
Expansion plans
The company plans to expand Bolt Market’s coverage to additional towns and neighbourhoods by the end of 2025. While Nairobi remains the primary focus, the company has signalled its ambition to reach secondary cities where demand for convenience and online retail is rising.
The company will still invest in its retail partnerships to ensure that large supermarket chains and smaller neighbourhood stores are integrated into the service. This could broaden the platform’s appeal and make it relevant to both premium shoppers and price-sensitive households.
