Yesterday, Britam Insurance introduced its first Electric Vehicle (EV) insurance cover in Kenya. Britam joins GA Insurance which launched Electic Vehicle insurance covers in Kenya back in 2023.

Some of the biggest concerns EV owners have, such as the high cost of batteries and limited repair infrastructure, are addressed by this new cover. The Battery Protect Cover Extension makes this cover stand out. This safeguards the battery and electric motor system. These are some of the most expensive and critical components of an EV.

Other benefits include coverage for personal charging equipment and an out-of-charge recovery service, which tows vehicles to the nearest charging station when stranded. Beyond these, the product extends the protections available under Britam’s standard motor policies, such as accidental damage, theft, fire, flooding, political violence and terrorism, road rescue, and courtesy vehicles.

The insurance also covers privately used electric motorcycles.

    Supporting a Green Transition

Britam says the launch is part of its wider sustainability agenda. In 2023, the company installed three EV charging stations with six ports and a 183-panel solar car port at its Nairobi headquarters.

“This EV Insurance cover shows how Britam innovates to meet evolving customer needs while supporting sustainable transport,” said James Mbithi, CEO and Principal Officer, Britam General Insurance. “By providing tailored EV insurance, we are contributing to a low-carbon future while helping the market scale responsibly.”

Kenya is not alone in pushing and encouraging EV adoption. Countries such as South Africa, Rwanda and Egypt are taking steps to incentivise electric mobility. Rwanda has introduced tax exemptions on EV imports and charging equipment. South Africa on the other hand has seen private players unveil EV ride-hailing fleets in the country.
