NTT DATA has announced a significant sustainability milestone with the installation of a solar energy system at its newly launched East Africa headquarters at The Cube, Riverside Drive. The system is expected to cut the company’s reliance on grid electricity by over 33%, supporting its broader target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—a full decade ahead of the Paris Agreement deadline.
The investment aligns with growing momentum around green energy across East Africa, as countries ramp up solar, hydro, and carbon market initiatives to meet global climate goals.
“Our investment in solar energy is not just about reducing operational costs—it’s about taking responsibility for the future,” said Richard Hechle, Managing Director, NTT DATA East Africa. “Technology and sustainability must go hand in hand.”
Smart Office, Smarter Future
The new office integrates AI-powered boardrooms and intelligent workspaces designed for hybrid collaboration. Features include:
- AI-enabled videoconferencing and transcription
- Interactive whiteboarding
- Room automation systems
- Supported by: Cisco Board Pro, PTZ 4K cameras, Biamp DSP audio, LG dynamic digital signage
“Our innovations reflect NTT DATA’s vision for smarter, more inclusive workspaces — aligned with East Africa’s growing appetite for ambient intelligence and energy-efficient computing,” added Hechle.
Driving Ethical AI and Digital Inclusion
Speaking at the launch, Alan Turnley-Jones, CEO for NTT DATA Middle East and Africa, emphasized the Nairobi office’s role in shaping ethical, scalable, and region-specific tech solutions.
“This facility signals our intent to grow in Africa—not just in footprint, but in impact. With AI and cloud innovation, we can help African enterprises leapfrog legacy systems and create jobs in the digital economy.”
Turnley-Jones highlighted NTT DATA’s AI strategy, including:
- Smart AI Agent™ and Agentic AI Ecosystem

NTT DATA is also investing in digital skills training and partnerships with institutions like Mistral AI to prepare Africa’s youth for the “user-in-the-loop” AI future—where human supervision, ethics, and AI orchestration are critical.
“The future of AI in Africa must be ethical, inclusive, and built for real-world impact,” said Turnley-Jones.
The launch event featured the Ambassador of Japan to Kenya, regional executives, and guided office tours showcasing how sustainable energy and intelligent tech are shaping East Africa’s digital future.
