Dashlane to Discontinue Free Plan in September

Dashlane

Dashlane is phasing out its free password manager plan by September 16, 2025. This is so that it can focus on premium security innovations and streamline its offerings. The company announced that all Free plan users have already been upgraded to a temporary Premium trial, which includes access to all features until the discontinuation date.

With this move, Dashlane becomes the latest provider to rethink its freemium strategy.

Until September 16, Dashlane Free users can try out Premium features at no cost. The premium features include unlimited password storage across all devices, real-time phishing protection, support for passkeys and secure data sharing

Dashlane is offering a 50% discount on Premium and Friends & Family plans until August 12, 2025 in a move aimed at retaining users.

Those who do not update after September 16 will lose the ability to edit or view their password vault. Their stored data will remain secure, but only accessible for export until September 16, 2026. Accounts in the free-tier will be permanently deleted unless reactivated with a paid plan.

Dashlane’s decision follows a broader industry trend where password managers are shifting focus to paid tiers. This shift is driven by the need to fund advanced features like AI-powered breach alerts, cross-device sync and secure digital identity management.

It also reflects the rising costs of maintaining secure infrastructure in the face of growing cybersecurity threats. With most of these platforms, ree users do not financially contributing to these costs but they still consume a share of the infrastructure and support resources.

Users unwilling to pay can consider alternative password managers such as Bitwarden and KeePass (open-source).
