Uber Boda has unveiled a new suite of safety features and professional training protocols designed to transform the landscape of motorcycle taxi services in Kenya. This is the first of its kind for the ride-hailing service in Kenya.
The new safety-focused initiatives include:
- GPS tracking and real-time trip monitoring
- Driver background checks and professional training
- Emergency response tools
- The “Share My Trip” feature for enhanced accountability

“Safety has always been at the core of everything we do—whether someone is riding in a car or on a motorcycle,” said Cassie Jaganyi, Head of Communications for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa. “We’ve introduced technology and training standards that set a new benchmark for motorcycle taxi safety in Kenya, ensuring both our drivers and riders can travel with confidence.”
Kenya’s boda boda sector is a major economic force. It has over 2.5 million registered motorcycles and at least 1.8 million in active use. This sector generates more than KES 660 billion annually, about 4.4% of Kenya’s GDP.
Sustainabilty
Uber Boda has also announced a partnership with Greenwheels Africa to introduce electric motorcycles into its fleet as part of this transformation. The initiative is a push towards sustainable mobility to align safety with environmental responsibility.
“We believe safety and sustainability can go hand in hand,” Uber said in its statement. “Through this partnership, we’re contributing to Kenya’s green transport future while maintaining the highest standards in personal mobility.”
This move comes as tech-based platforms like Uber increasingly look to shape the future of urban micro-mobility in Africa by bringing innovation, structure, and accountability to sectors ripe for modernization.
