Thunes has announced it will permanently discontinue its PayPal Mobile Money transfer service with M-Pesa on August 16, 2025. This platform has been popular among Kenyans, as it enables easy money transfers between PayPal and M-Pesa.

This platform allows both withdrawals from PayPal and deposits as well and all this is facilitated within minutes.

This message appears on the paypal-mobilemoney.com website, which currently facilitates the integration. Below is a screenshot of the notice seen on the PayPal Mobile Money’s website.

After August 16th, PayPal transfers via the website will not be accessible. All transfers will be processed exclusively through the M-Pesa app through the PayPal mini app. This is for the direct PayPal to M-Pesa, you will still be able to transfer from PayPal to Equity bank if you have been using that.

To avoid any disruptions, we recommend you:

    • Download or update the official M-Pesa app.
    • Link your PayPal account within the M-Pesa app (under “Grow”)
    • Avoid using the PayPal Mobile Money site after August 16, 2025

Note: Your PayPal and M-Pesa names have to match for you to link PayPal and M-Pesa. If you have 3 names on PayPal, make sure these are the same names on your M-Pesa account.

The PayPal-M-Pesa bridge has been essential for digital freelancers, online retailers, and remote workers in Kenya who receive payments via PayPal. The announcement of this transition comes a few days after the PayPal mini app was added to the M-Pesa app. This isn’t the end of PayPal–M-PESA transfers but rather a change in how you access them.
