Sama announced its successful recertification as a Certified B Corporation, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to balancing profit with purpose. Sama received an overall B Impact score of 118.4 from B Lab, up from 98.5 at initial certification in 2020. The new score affirms Sama’s progress across governance, workforce development, community impact and environmental stewardship, exceeding the 80-point threshold required for B Corp status and more than doubling the median score of ordinary businesses.

B Corp Certification assesses the overall social and environmental impact of a company. To achieve B Corp Certification, a company must meet a score of at least 80 points in the B Impact Assessment, an evaluation of a company’s positive impact, and pass a risk review, an evaluation of a company’s negative impact. B Corp companies are pioneers in establishing a fair, inclusive and regenerative economy, measured according to stringent criteria by B Lab across operations, including governance, community involvement, environmental impact and more.

“We are thrilled to receive this recertification, which is a clear testament to our commitment to inclusive decision-making that considers all stakeholders,” said Annepeace Alwala, Vice President – Global Service Delivery at Sama.

“It reflects our continued investment in supporting and developing our staff through financial security, health and safety, wellness, and career growth. This recognition also underscores the meaningful impact we are making on the environment and the communities we serve, while creating sustainable economic opportunities,” she added.

The recertification is accompanied by the release of Sama’s 2024 Annual Impact Report, which outlines the company’s progress across key environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives. The year 2024 marked significant milestones for the company in environmental conservation, employee welfare, and economic development.

In this report, since Sama began their operations in Kenya in 2008, the company has impacted 69,595 people through training, and employment, and invested more than Ksh.11.3 million in scholarships.

They have also established new professional development and mentorship programs that link senior leaders with emerging talent in Kenya and Uganda, alongside the continuation of the Sama Scholarship Program for degree completion and the launch of key training programs to advance AI skills for digital workers.

The company also reduced carbon emissions by 17.1 per cent from the 2023 baseline, advancing its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated targets. This reduction was a result of  Sama transitioning 23% of its operation to use renewable energy and reductions in employee commute emissions and reduced business travel emissions.

Sama was recently recognised as one of the top three Inspiring Workplaces in 2025 across the Middle East and Africa, one of only two tech companies and the sole data-annotation provider on the list. The company was also recognised by Newsweek on its Greatest Workplaces for Women and Greatest Workplaces for Inclusion & Diversity lists.
