Understanding MediaTek Smartphone Processors

If you have used an Android smartphone over the last 10 years, you may have used one powered by a MediaTek processor. It is one of the handful smartphone processors we see on most smartphones. MediaTek is the 5th largest global fabless semiconductor company. It is a Chinese company that manufactures chips for smartphones and other home entertainment and IoT devices.

Back in the day, MediaTek processors were mostly found on entry level Android smartphones. This has changed and you can now find MediaTek processors on wide range of smartphones in different price segments.

In this article, I will be covering the different MediaTek processors and show how the company categorizes them. I will look at the processors found in entry level smartphones and even those found in some flagship Android smartphones. Some of the processors from MediaTek include the Helio series and the Dimensity series.

MediaTek Helio Series

This is the processor series you are likely to find on most budget and mid-range smartphones.

Helio A Series (Entry-Level)

The MediaTek Helio A series is the chip you are likely to find in entry level smartphones. This series was mostly seen on smartphones  from 2018 to 2020.

According to MediaTek, “Devices powered by Helio A Series are ideal for developing markets, where casual users or anyone looking for a device can receive great value without sacrificing modern capabilities.”

Some of the processors in this seris include the Helio A20, Helio A22 and the Helio A25.

Notable phones with the Helio A series processors:

  • Tecno Spark Go 2021 (Helio A20)
  • Xiaomi Redmi A1+ (Helio A22)
  • Infinix Hot 9 (Helio A25)

Helio P Series (Power-Efficient)

The MediaTek Helio P series ensures battery efficiency without compromising on performance and user experience. This is the chip family you can expect to find on budget and mid range smartphones.

“MediaTek Helio P series chipsets are both nimble and powerful, providing smartphone manufactures with a highly flexible tool for performance-mainstream differentiation,” says MediaTek.

Some of the notable proecessors in the family include MediaTek Helio P10, Helio P20, Helio P22, Helio P23, Helio P25, Helio P30, Helio P35, Helio P60, Helio P65, Helio P70, Helio P90 and Helio P95.

Notable phones include:

  • Oppo Reno Z (Helio P90)
  • Samsung Galaxy A31 (Helio P65)
  • Infinix Note 5 (Helio P23)

Helio G Series (Gaming-Focused)

The MediaTek Helio G series is a gaming-focused chip family. Some of the features you can expect to find in this series include MediaTek HyperEngine, high performance for mid-range gaming devices.

“The G series features an array of technologies that boost the mobile gaming experience; from vivid visuals and rapid sensing touchscreens to enhancing the connection between your smartphone and the internet,” MediaTek says.

The processors in this series include Helio G25, Helio G35, Helio G36, Helio G70, Helio G80, Helio G85, Helio G88, Helio G90 Series, Helio G91, Helio G95, Helio G96, Helio G99, Helio G100.

 MediaTek Dimensity Series (5G-Enabled Processors)

MediaTek Dimensity 900

The MediaTek Dimensity series is the premium chip family focusing on 5G connectivity.  These processors offer the best in performance and most high end features you can expect on a smartphone.

Dimensity 700-800 Series (Low Mid-Range 5G Phones)

The Dimensity 700 and 800 series chips are made for mid range 5G smartphones. These processors have 5G supports, AI performance and better gaming.

The Dimensity 900 to 1200 series chips are designed perfectly for mid-range devices. These chips are made who those who want a near flagship performance. Some of the key features include better power efficiency, improved camera capabilities and enhanced AI.

Dimensity 6000 Series (Mid-Range)

This series is for mid-range devices too. It offers good performance at a reasonable price. This processor series provides a decent gaming experience, good camera support as well as efficient AI processing.

The Dimensity 6300 found on the recently unveiled OPPO Reno12 F is one example of a processor in this series.

Dimensity 7000 Series (Upper Mid-Range)

The Dimensity 7000 series is designed for upper mid-range smartphones. This series offers better performance compared to the 6000 series while still being affordable.

With the 7000 series, you get faster CPU and GPU, enhanced camera, better AI enhancements and 5G support.

Dimensity 8000 Series (High-End Mid-Range)

This is the Dimensity series that can compete with the Snapdragon 7 series. With this series, you are getting a powerful multi-core CPU and better AI processing. It is perfect for those looking for reliable multitasking as well as gamers and content creators.

One of the processors in this family if the Dimensity 8200 Ultimate found on the Tecno Camon 30 premier.

Dimensity 9000 Series (Flagship-Level Performance)

The top range MediaTek processor is the 9000 series. This competes with the likes of the Snapdragon 8 series found on most of the recent flagship smartphones.

With this series, you get high performance, advanced 5G support, advanced AI processing, high-performance camera support as well as a good gaming experience.

This is the series you can find on devices like the OPPO Find N2 Flip, Tecno V Fold and even the Xiaomi 13T Pro.

  • For Budget Users: Helio A/P Series.
  • For Gamers: Helio G Series.
  • For Future-Proofing with 5G: Dimensity 700/800 Series.
