Jumia has announced the availability of Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency satellite internet on its platform in Kenya. Starlink services have been available in Kenya since 2023. Those interested could buy the kits directly from Starlink or from local resellers.

Jumia comes in as a reseller to help drive growth not only in Kenya but also in Nigeria. Starlink recently hired a Growth Manager for Africa

The Starlink Residential Kit is available on Jumia for Ksh 39,500. You can get the Kit directly on Jumia’s website right now.

“This agreement aligns perfectly with our mission of using technology to improve lives across Africa. By expanding access to Starlink’s internet service through the Jumia platform, individuals and communities can be empowered with high-speed, low-latency internet access, driving economic growth and unlocking new opportunities,” said Hisham ElGabry, Group Chief Commercial Officer, Jumia Group.

How Starlink Works

Starlink provides users with alternative services from what you can get from traditional internet service providers.

  1. You install a small dish antenna designed to communicate with the Starlink satellites in orbit.
  2. The Starlink Terminal establishes a connection with one of the Starlink satellites in orbit.
  3. Once the connection is established, the Starlink Terminal sends and receives data from the satellite using radio frequencies. The satellite then relays this data to other satellites in the network, which in turn relay it to a ground station.
  4. The ground station forwards the data to the internet allowing the user to access the web.
  5. The Starlink network uses multiple satellites in orbit at any given time, which means that if one satellite goes out of range or experiences problems, the network can automatically switch to another satellite to maintain a connection.
  6. Starlink also uses laser communications to transmit data between satellites to increase the speed and reduce the latency of the service.
