Showmax has announced the revamped packages and refreshed brand identity that will be available on its platform next month. Showmax 2.0 will officially launch on January 26 when Multichoice will start migrating the current subscribers’ accounts. New subscribers on the other hand will have access to the updated apps. By 12 February 2024 the new Showmax will be live in all markets.

Showmax 2.0 is launching 10 months after MultiChoice, Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky joined forces. This partnership gives Showmax access to NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming platform and its content.

“Peacock’s best-in-class technology platform will deliver a world-class streaming experience to Showmax audiences,” said Patrick Miceli, Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, Direct- to-Consumer & International, NBCUniversal. “The Peacock platform was designed from day one to support both live and on-demand content, including the biggest live sporting events, so we look forward to extending that capability and reliability to the new Showmax.”

    Showmax 2.0 packages

With Showmax 2.0, subscribers will not only get new content but also new subscription packages. The packages will start from Ksh 300 per month for the entertainment mobile only package and max out at Ksh 1000 for the Entertainment + Premier League package. The Showmax Premier League only package will cost Ksh 500 per month.

“There are currently just over 450 million smartphones in the hands of individuals across Africa … and more than 250 million avid football lovers on the continent,” says Marc Jury, CEO of Showmax. “Showmax Premier League is a game-changing product that gives individuals a ticket to the football they love, wherever they are, on the device they always have with them, at a price that’s impossible not to love.”

    No 4K Streaming

Even with the launch of Showmax 2.0, we are still not getting 4K support. This may not be a big deal for some people but for others it might be considering the fact that Netflix supports 4K content for just Ksh 1,100 per month, 100 more expensive than Showmax. The Peacock platform has 4K support so I expect the same on Showmax later on. 4K streaming at only 1K per month will be a very good deal.

    Peacock streaming platform

The Peacock streaming platform by NBCUniversal has a wide range of TV shows, movies, and live sports. Through this partnership, Showmax will get access to this content and I will be keen to interact with it. I am also interested to see how the Peacock recommendation engine performs and if it is better that what Showmax had before. It will also be important to see how it compares to Netflix’s recommendation engine.
