A few days ago, Safaricom announced that its 5G network is available in 35 out of the 47 counties. This is just after 1 year of its official roll out. I did cover this and said that Airtel has not made any announcement ever since it announced the official roll out of its 5G network in Kenya.

Airtel has now confirmed that it has been hard at work rolling out 5G in select areas across the country and will expand to more by end of the year. The company has said that it will be rolling out additional 100 5G sites in the country this year.

The roll out of the additional 100 sites will take the total number of Airtel 5G sites in Kenya from 180 wards to 221 wards. This will also expand availability from the current 15 counties to 32 counties by the end of the year. This will be close to the 35 counties where Safaricom 5G is available. By the end of the year, Airtel 5G will be available in Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Machakos, Kisumu, Kilifi, Kajiado, Kwale, Kakamega, Bomet, Embu, Homabay, Kericho, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Busia, Garissa, Migori, Bungoma, Muranga, Kisii, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Nyamira, Nyeri, Siaya and Nyandarua.

Keep in mind that even though Airtel 5G will be available in 32 counties, it will not cover each and every county. It will mostly be available in some of the major towns that are densely populated.

” The 5G network is more about faster internet, connecting people, businesses, and communities in ways that were once unimaginable. Our commitment to innovation and connectivity remains unwavering, and we’re excited to be a part of this new era of possibilities.” Said Airtel Kenya Managing Director, Ashish Malhotra.
