Safaricom Ethiopia has announced that its CEO, Anwar Soussa, will be leaving the company effective July 31, 2023, after serving for nearly two years. Soussa has played a pivotal role in the growth and development of Safaricom Ethiopia since its inception. The reasons for his departure and his future plans are currently undisclosed.

In response to this news, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa expressed his sincere appreciation for Anwar’s leadership and contributions to Safaricom Ethiopia. Throughout his tenure, Anwar has displayed unwavering dedication and passion, which have been instrumental in the company’s accomplishments thus far. The successor to Anwar will be announced at a later date.

“I extend my best wishes to Anwar as he concludes his assignment with Safaricom Ethiopia,” added Ndegwa.

Safaricom Ethiopia commenced operations in 2022 and has achieved significant milestones, including obtaining the license to launch M-Pesa. As of May this year, Safaricom Ethiopia reported a subscriber base of over 4 million, with expectations of further growth in the upcoming months.

Anwar joined Safaricom Ethiopia in August 2021 with the mandate to establish the organization, initiate business operations, and implement a high-quality network. The network currently covers 25% of the population and spans across 50 cities/towns.

Safaricom acknowledges Anwar’s successful oversight of crucial milestones in a dynamic environment, such as team onboarding and the successful commercial launch of Ethiopia’s second telecommunications operator.
