DStv customers in Kenya are set to pay more for their monthly subscription as from April. This is not the first time the pay TV company is adjusting its prices upwards. For those who use the service, you will remember that the company raised its rates back in September and for them to do the same in just 8 months is a bit ridiculous. The company never really has good explanations for these adjustments.
Given that DStv has the rights to key sports events in Kenya and most African markets, the company has been accused of taking advantage of its customers with these price hikes and generally high subscription rates. The service is voluntary but still, it is not a good look.
Replying to concerns by their customers, DStv Kenya said, “As our costs to operate the business increase due to various reasons including foreign exchange rates, taxes, inflation, and content costs, we needed to adjust our package prices. We have worked hard to keep the prices as low as possible, while still ensuring we offer our customers the best quality service. We have various options and different DStv packages starting from Kes 650 to ensure we cater to all family budgets.”

While DStv raises its rates, on demand video streaming services like Netflix are lowering their monthly subscription. Recently, Netflix announced a major price reduction of up to 50% for some packages for the Kenya market. The company hopes to attract those who prefer the video on demand model over traditional Television.
