Kenya Power plans to start trials of electric vehicle charging stations in Nairobi and Nakuru. The company plans to start the trials next month as a way of expanding its revenue streams.

Kenya power hopes that it can take advantage of the growing e-mobility industry. It seeks to grow electricity sales as the e-mobility sector grows. With a number of car owners opting for electric vehicles, Kenya Power wants to be prepared as demand for charging stations grows.

“The proof of concept phase will be used by Kenya Power to develop and pilot the proposed e-mobility system in a scaled manner within Nairobi and Nakuru,” the company said.

With the trials, the company hopes to collect key data on the viability of the EV charging business before it embarks on a full scale rollout. “The phase will give Kenya Power a hands-on experience to evaluate the potential and complexity of e-mobility ecosystem before a full-scale implementation,” the company said.

Full scale implementation will see Kenya Power build home, business and public charging infrastructure all over the country. With this, it will be easier for Electric vehicle owners to charge their vehicles.
