For a number of years, Safaricom has invested in its internet infrastructure and it has worked well for the telco. The company was the first to roll out 4G LTE in Kenya and has plans to be the first to roll out 5G in the country soon.

In the latest report published by Ookla, Safaricom has the fastest average download speeds in Kenya at 22.74 Mbps. These are the results for Q2 2022.

Coming in second is Airtel with median download speeds of 15.71 Mbps and Faiba settles for third with speeds of 14.08 Mbps.

Telkom is fourth with 4.71 Mbps.It is interesting to see Telkom with such low speeds as it has been investing so much in its internet infrastructure recently. It looks like the results are yet to be experienced by the end users. Its median speeds are quite low to be honest and in 2022 a big telco should not have anything below 10 MBps as its average internet speeds.

The surprise in this report is Airtel. I did not expect the Telco to have such speeds as most people I have talked to have not had any positive feedback about its network. It seems like it has been investing in its infrastructure and is doing a better job compared to Telkom.

On fixed broadband, Faiba had the fastest median download speed (24.94 Mbps) and highest Consistency (50.6%) in Kenya during Q2 2022.

At the city-level, Mombasa was home to the fastest mobile and fixed broadband download speeds at 23.59 Mbps and 12.03 Mbps, respectively, during Q2 2022.
