Google Messages has had end-to-end encryption since November last year. The feature has been in beta since then but now it is rolling out to everyone.

With end-to-end encryption, your messages are safe and no one can access them, not even Google. It took long enough to have end-to-end encryption Google messages but at least it is finally here.

End-to-end encryption on Google messages will only work if both parties are using RCS (Rich Communication Services). This means that you need an active internet connection to use it. The feature will only work on one-on-one communications and not for group chats.

If either party loses their internet connection, messages won’t be sent. Internet is critical for this to work and the messages will be held until the connection is established. Users still have the option of sending the message as plain, unsecured SMS. Users will also be able to manually verify their messages are encrypted in the conversation details.

End-to-end encryption is available on Messages on the web too, no RCS is required here.
