Google Photos is certainly not the first app you’ll consider when wanting to edit your videos. However, although the app mainly focused on backing up photos and videos, Google is rolling out a revamped and much more powerful editor for videos.

The same revamped editor is already available on iOS after the February rollout. The new video editor packs more features and capabilities than the old version, with new options like color correction with granular controls for brightness, warmth, tint, skin color, vignette, etc., extensive cropping options, individual frame exports, and audio removal.

Additionally, it also does the rotation, trimming, and stabilizing available in the old Photos video editing feature. Overall the new video editor has 30 new granular options to play with.

But that doesn’t make Google Photos a much more powerful video editor app in any way. Specifically, Photos doesn’t have the ability to combine videos just yet, a handy feature that allows one to create short movies.

Of course, many other apps have much more editing capabilities that trump what Google is offering inside Photos.

The latest addition could be seen as a way for Google to make Photos a more go-to app for different purposes – and maybe even pay for it to enjoy more cloud storage in the future.

According to Android Police, the new video editor is rolling out via a server-side update and to a variety of devices, not just Google’s Pixel phones. The feature is also open for everyone to use.
