The OPPO Reno 5 is the latest smartphone from the company to launch in Kenya. This is the successor to the Reno 4 and comes with some upgraded specs and one of them is support for 50W fast charging. This is what OPPO is calling Super VOOC and having used it, I am impressed.
The charging adapter that you get in the box support 65W VOOC charging but those speeds will only be applicable if you are using the Reno 5 Pro. For the Reno 5, you are getting 50W which is still faster that most other smartphones within its price range.
OPPO is one company that has been serious about fast charging and this is evident with Super VOOC.
What is Super VOOC
Super VOOC short for (Voltage Open Loop Multi-step Constant-Current Charging) is a battery charging technology that allows for faster recharging speeds on smartphones. This tech was developed by OPPO and is available on some of its devices including then new OPPO Reno 5 that is available in Kenya for about Ksh 41,999.
OPPO’s Super VOOC is different from other fast charging technologies and it relies on higher amperage to achieve faster speeds while other charging technologies use higher voltage.
How It Works
On the OPPO Reno 5, we are getting the 50W Super VOOC which outputs 10V/5A charging current which improves the charging speed of the Reno 5. With these charging speeds, expect to fully charge your phone from 0% in less than an hour. This is impressive and faster than most smartphones we have on the market right now.
The charging speeds reach 50W when the charge on the battery is low and tends to slow down as you get closer to 100%. With this you can get the battery filled up to 80% very fast and have to wait a little longer for the last 20% to be filled.
You will need to use the charging adapter provided to get the fast speeds as it is the one that supports that.
Why it is Important?
Having faster charging speeds means that you save time and can fully charge your smartphone in just a few minutes. This is good if you are running low and want to quickly charge your phone before leaving the house.
Super VOOC promises:
- High charging efficiency: the principle of voltage division in series circuits allows high-current direct charging.
- High discharge efficiency: the SuperVOOC system judges the various voltage levels required by different internal components and allocates voltage accordingly through its back-end charge pump.
Real-Life Use
I have been using the OPPO Reno 5 for a few weeks and so far I am impressed with the charging speeds. This is one of the most impressive features of this phone as you can even see when the phone is charging and observe that going up as the phone is connected to the power source.
The OPPO Reno 5 comes with a 4310 mAh battery that is big enough to last an entire day depending on how you use your phone. When I was actively testing this battery, I got 6 hours and 3 minutes of screen on time which is good for phone this powerful. Out of this, I got to use the phone for about 12 and a half hours since last full charge which is also a good number. Throughout this time, I was always connected to the internet, played PUBG for some minutes, made a few calls and used social media. This shows that the battery does not drain that fast and that is good for me.
Battery use
Super VOOC comes in handy here and even though the battery does not drain that fast, I could top it up quickly if I needed to. The phone does not get that hot when charging as is with the case with other smartphones that support fast charging. It still felt cool when charging.
