Huawei has, to date, launched two foldable smartphones. The first, Huawei Mate X, came out in November 2019 but was limited to China’s home market at launch. The original Mate X’s souped version, dubbed Mate Xs, followed a few months later with upgraded internals in March 2020.

The company is prepping to launch a successor, the second-generation to its foldable smartphones series, which will be called Huawei Mate X2. According to a teaser on the company’s official Weibo account, Huawei Mate X2 will be first launched in China on the 22nd of this month.

The Mate X2 launch teaser doesn’t give many details about the device(check the featured image above).

Huawei Mate Xs had an 8-inch flexible display that folds outwardly to 6.6 inches, Kirin 990 5G processor, 8GB RAM, 512GB ROM, rear quad camera setup (40 MP f/1.8 wide-angle Lens + 16 MP f/2.2 Ultra-Wide Angle + 8 MP Telephoto f/2.4 aperture (OIS) + Time-of-Flight (TOF) Camera sensor) and a 4500 mAh. The device sold in select markets at around €2,499(~ Ksh 330,00).

It also remains to be seen if the Mate X2 will make it to Africa, unlike its predecessors.

As usual, the only thing that is certain for now is the unavailability of Google Services on the device, which has made Huawei’s devices less attractive to the users in markets outside China. However, Huawei has been availing its device to select markets globally.

Locally, Huawei Kenya has just opened preorders of its upcoming budget Y-series phone, Huawei Y7a. Huawei Y7a is available on pre-order for Kshs. 23,000.
