Google Meet Latest Update Brings Background Noise Filtration

In a quest to better its offering, Google has provided yet another update to Meet. The latest update in Meet betters the platform by adding the ability to filter out background noises.

Background noise like keyboard typing, doors opening and closing, and construction outside your window will now be automatically filtered out. The feature, known as Noise cancellation, uses Cloud-based AI to intelligently remove obstruction noises while allowing your voice through.

A caveat to this feature is that it only filters out noises that don’t sound like voices. Thus, voices from TV or people talking at the same time won’t be filtered out.

It was a much-needed feature and the company has previously labelled it as one of the top-requested features two months ago.

For now, the feature is rolling out to G Suite Enterprise and G Suite Enterprise for Education customers who use Meet on the web in a number of countries. It’s yet to hit many countries as of now. Mobile users will have to hold their guns now with the promised launch timeline being “soon.”

It’s sad that it isn’t enabled by default on the web but you can do so via the settings menu.

    Update Sept 29th:

Background noise cancellation starts rolling out on Android and iOS for G Suite customers.

How to turn on Noise cancellation in Google Meet

    1. Go to the Meet homepage.
    2. Click Settings (or Gear icon).
    3. Select Audio.
    4. Turn on Noise cancellation.
    5. Click Done.
