Twitter has been very secretive when it comes to account verification and for long they’ve had internal rules on what determines the qualifications. Typically any account with “public interest” would get the blue checkmark. However, they have been past concerns on the whole issue and that lead the company to pause verification of accounts for a while pulling down the public submission form.
But now it seems the company wants to bring back verification – in full – and this time clearer and easier to access for everyone.
App reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, recently tweeted developments of a new in-app system for requesting verification inside the settings section.
In addition, the company also wants to publicly document various things that will be considered before verifying an account. It will ensure “more clarity and transparency around the process,” says the company in response to TechCrunch.
It makes sense that the company now wants to be clear on how they do the process especially after backlash for verifying alleged white supremacists in 2017.
The company has in recent months started to verify health practitioners who help provide credible information on the platform as part of cracking down on fake news around covid-19.
It’s not yet clear when the company will begin rolling out the new feature. The company didn’t disclose those details even to TechCrunch although they mentioned that the feature has been in development ever since they decided to pause verification and revamp the system.
