Netflix to Start Cancelling Inactive Subscriptions

Netflix wants to get rid of inactive members from its platform. The company will be targeting those who are paying for a membership plan without using it. The video streaming platform will be asking inactive subscribers to confirm if they would like to keep their membership or not.

Netflix will be targeting those who have not used the service for a year of have stopped watching for more than two years. These are the people the company will be sending emails or in-app notifications as from this week.

Those who do not confirm that they want to keep their subscriptions will be let go as the subscriptions will be cancelled. If they decide at some point that they want to get back to Netflix, they will be able to re-enable their membership without any fuss. Reactivating a cancelled subscription within 10 months will restore all the previous profiles, favorites and the account preferences.

 Not Many Inactive Subscribers

Netflix has also noted that there are not that many inactive users on its platform. The company says that these account form a very small percentage of its total user base as there are “only” a few hundred thousand accounts.

The company is definitely cleaning up its house as it has recently seen a surge in subscribers thanks to the current pandemic. It needs active users as that is the only way it can collect data on how people use its service and use the same data to improve the platform.

During this crisis, Netflix saw new sign-ups increase by 47% as more people turn to online entertainment to keep busy.
