South Korean tech company LG has taken a paradigm shift in its flagship smartphone offerings. The new phones have already received a design overhaul, based on renders shared last week by the company.

The company’s new phone design has reimagined the rear camera now arranged in a “falling drops” manner with lenses placed in a descending order based on size. The edges are symmetrically curved all around the device. Bezels are also of similar size.

The new design is here to replace both the LG G and V phone brands. The new name is Velvet, and we have already spotted some 3D renders of look-alike devices online.

The new device is expected to be launched in May, despite the current covid-19 situation that is hurting industries across the world. The new name marks the company’s first move from “alphanumerical designations in favor of familiar and expressive names.”

“Our new branding reflects current trends of addressing the unique personal tastes and emotions of the individual with a greater emphasis on design,” said Chang Ma, senior vice president of product strategy of LG’s mobile business, in a statement.

The company hopes that the new branding will not only “resonate with today’s consumers” but also, in return, help them “to establish a clearer brand identity,” according to the Ma.

LG’s mobile business has not been performing well in the past with last week’s earnings report, still projecting losses in the current quarter. If that is the case then the company will have its 20th quarter operating in the red zone. The company’s primary profit driver is its home appliance business.
