After announcing its partnership with Intel to bring 5G to laptops, MediaTek has announced a new line of 5G integrated chipsets. The new series is dubbed Dimensity and the company even announced the first chip in line – Dimensity 1000 5G – yesterday.

Dimensity 1000 5G is crafted from the 7nm manufacturing process. The chip is integrated with 5G which gives it more advantages in terms of power-saving, unlike processors that need a separate 5G modem. More so, the chipset also occupies less real estate inside devices unlike chipsets with separate 5G modems.

Being the first chipset in MediaTek’s Dimensity lineup, Dimensity 1000 5G only supports a single 5G band – sub-6 GHz. However, the company says they will eventually support the mmWave 5G band in the future. But even with the Dimensity 1000 5G, MediaTek’s new chipset supports dual 5G Sim cards, which is great.

Other than the touted power efficiency, the chipset is also capable and can deliver up to 4.7Gbps download speeds and 2.5Gbps uploads speeds for 5G frequencies below 6 GHz.

Another notable feature is the support of Bluetooth 5.1 and WIFI 6. On top of that, Dimensity 1000 5G also brings the following features to smartphones;

MediaTek plans to compete with its long rival Qualcomm with its new chipset series. In comparison, the Taiwanese chipmaker claims WIFI 6 on their new chip is 38% faster than WIFI 5 on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855. Plus, it consumes 40% less power than the latter.

Smartphones running this chipset will launch in 2020 and the company says China and other Asian markets may have such devices earlier.
